In an era of value-based care leaders are challenged to manage the tensions created when attempting to balance delivering safe, quality healthcare outcomes, affordable and economically sound services, equitable care, while meeting patient experience expectations. Leader qualities that are perceived by employees as #authentic have been shown to have a positive impact on the work environment, to job satisfaction, job security, and #employee retention.
A leader who is approachable facilitates two-way dialogue around what is working well, what can be improved, or where an employee may need help removing a particular barrier to be successful. Employees often have insights into the inner challenges or opportunities that can help or hurt an organization which, makes them a great resource.
Be yourself and tell the truth in a way that is verifiable by others because this creates a level of trust and buy-in. There is a crisis of confidence and trust in the workplace climate of all leaders (Edelman, 2017). We must resolve the perspective that leaders are not trustworthy—our success depends upon it. Communication that is open and transparent communicates to employees that what they have to say is valued and promotes a sense of belonging and promotes a sense of meaningful work because of their contribution.
The level of competence the manager candidate demonstrates has the potential to inspire followership. Therefore, HR professionals must always consider the current level of competency as it compares to the requisite skills to do the job with an eye on what skills need to be developed to ensure the manager’s success as part of the hiring process.

#Employee engagement represents the level in which your employees feel connected to their work, their co-workers, the organization and the mission of the organization.
